You may have heard from your doctor or a TV ad that fibromyalgia is caused by over-activity of pain sensing nerves. It’s true, this is one important source of fibromyalgia pain, but there are other even more important triggers of pain that must be addressed in order to get significant pain reduction. And unfortunately your doctor may not be aware of them.

Many studies have shown that the fibromyalgia nervous system has become sensitized and therefore has overactive responses resulting in pain. This is the target of the three FDA approved medications for this illness, and these medications can indeed be helpful-usually resulting in about 30 percent reduction of pain.

In my experience, both as someone with the illness personally and as a physician treating fibromyalgia, utilizing these medications alone is inadequate. For me, I didn’t find any relief from that deep, burning ache in my neck and upper back muscles until I found a treatment that addressed my pain in a different way. It turns out there is another huge factor that may be the missing piece of the pain puzzle.

The massive connective tissue network that surrounds all of our muscles—think of the shiny outer coating on a raw chicken breast—plays a key role in generating the pain and muscle tenderness of fibromyalgia. In order to get more effective pain relief, both patients and providers need to understand exactly how this connective tissue (also called fascia) contributes to fibromyalgia pain, and use this information to target treatment.

Fibromyalgia is a common chronic pain syndrome, affecting an estimated 3 to 9 million adults in the United States. Fibromyalgia is not a specific disease. The term fibromyalgia describes a pattern of symptoms that cluster together, including widespread body pain and sensitivity to pressure on specific spots on the body, called tender points. Indeed, individuals fortunate enough to avoid arthritis take some things for granted. As this brave mother just explained, her symptoms make every day activities difficult.

Contrary to popular belief, arthritis involves a wide array of symptoms: loss of motion, joint pain, stiffness, and swelling are the most common

Here are some quick facts about this complex disease:

-There are more than 100 forms of arthritis and closely related diseases.

-One in every four arthritis patients “say it causes severe pain (seven or higher on a zero to 10-point scale.”

– The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), fibromyalgia and gout.

THE ROLE FOOD PLAYS

Certain foods stimulate an inflammatory response, and certain foods suppress an inflammatory response. The context of this article focuses on the foods to avoid with arthritis – and some suggested alternatives.

For individuals not diagnosed with arthritis, “research suggests that including anti-inflammatory foods in your diet and limiting foods that trigger joint pain” may help ward off the disease.” More scientifically-valid research cites obesity as a primary risk factor. Relatedly, consumption of inflammatory foods correlates with obesity rates.

In this article, we’ll discuss 10 foods to avoid with arthritis. We’ll also provide some suggestions on what foods to eat instead.

Let’s get going!

FIRST, HERE ARE TEN FOODS TO AVOID:

1. GLUTEN & WHEAT

Gluten and wheat both produce an inflammatory response, particularly in folks who are intolerant to either. A leaky gut – or increased gut permeability – has been linked to joint pain in many studies.

A leaky gut allows toxins and waste to enter the bloodstream via the intestines; these harmful byproducts are seen as a threat, and the body initiates an immune response. The immune response is what leads to inflammation; sometimes targeting areas in and around the joints.

2. DAIRY

Many dairy products contain a type of protein called casein. Per a study conducted by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, casein protein may irritate tissue around the joints. Of course, joint irritation always results in inflammation within the surrounding area.

3. CORN OIL

Corn oil or, to be more precise, any food with high doses of omega-6 fatty acids (baked goods or baked snacks among them) can produce inflammation. It is quite easy to overindulge on this fatty acid because so many foods contain it.

Corn oil isn’t the only industrial oil to refrain from consuming. All oils derived from seeds – cottonseed, canola, grapeseed, soybean, safflower, rice brain, and sunflower oil, should also be avoided.

4. FRIED & PROCESSED FOODS

Per a study conducted at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, reducing consumption of fried and processed foods “can reduce inflammation and actually help restore the body’s natural defenses regardless of age of health status.”

The same study also provides dietary recommendations to prevent other diseases.

5. SALT & PRESERVATIVES

Many foods produced today include excessive amounts of salt and preservatives; the former makes some foods more palatable, and the latter artificially extends a product’s shelf life. Regardless, consuming too much salt and preservatives may produce inflammation within the joints.

Prepared foods, including of the frozen and microwavable varieties, are often loaded with salt, preservatives, and additives.

6. ‘AGES’

There’s no relation to the number of years you’ve lived, despite the name. AGE is an acronym for an advanced glycation end producta toxic byproduct resulting from fried, grilled, heated, or pasteurized foods.

Certain proteins in the body are “attacked” upon consuming AGE foods. Predictably, this stimulates an autoimmune response. Cytokines are inflammatory messengers released by the autoimmune system to protect against further damage caused by AGEs and other harmful agents. Cytokines directed to areas within or around joints exacerbates arthritis symptoms by increasing inflammation.

7. CERTAIN VEGETABLES

Surprising to see that some veggies are not recommended, huh?

The plant name for these vegetables is Solanaceae, and they contain solanine – a type of compound that produces adverse physiological reactions in arthritis patients. Consuming vegetables like eggplant, peppers, potatoes, and tomatoes can worsen arthritis pain.

If you’re a fan of sweet potatoes, here’s some great news: they’re not within this class of vegetables, and are okay to eat.

8. SUGAR

Nobody likes having to give up the occasional sugary treat, but processed sugars (similar to AGEs) release cytokines – molecules that stimulate inflammation.

Sugar, as many of you already know, is an “umbrella term” for other types of derivative ingredients; namely, ingredients that end in “ose,” such as fructose, glucose, and sucrose, among others. Just make sure you’re reading the label!

9. REFINED CARBOHYDRATES

Refined carbohydrates; mainly white flour products, white potatoes, white rice, and most cereals are high-glycemic index (HGI) foods. HGI foods incite the production of byproducts (including AGEs), which worsens inflammation.

Additionally, per an article published by Scientific American, refined carbs “may increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease more than fat does.” As mentioned, obesity is among the primary risk factors of arthritis.

10. ALCOHOL & TOBACCO

Alcohol and tobacco use has been linked to development of certain arthritis types. Per healthline.com, “Studies have shown that environmental factors play a part in who develops (rheumatoid arthritis) and that smoking is a big risk factor.”

A link has been discovered between levels of alcohol use and chances of developing gout.

What to eat instead…

Here are some of the best food types for arthritis, including examples of each type, as reported by the Arthritis Foundation:

Omega-3-rich fish; herring, mackerel, salmon and tuna. 

– Soybeans; tofu and edamame

Omega-3 foods and oil; extra virgin oil, avocado, walnuts, walnut oil (fish sources mentioned above.)

– Cherries

Broccoli

– Green tea

Citrus fruits; grapefruits, limes, and oranges

– Whole grains; brown rice, oatmeal

Beans; kidney beans, pinto beans, and red beans

Cancers love too easily and quickly, but their vulnerability makes them even more attractive and lovable. They will give you all the love they can muster, and then some, as romance and raw emotion come naturally to them.

Just like a loyal dog that you call your best friend, a Cancer will stay by you through the good times and the bad. The Lymphatic System And Chronic Pain Management

How does fibromyalgia affect the lymphatic system?

Chronic pain management techniques are called for when lymphatic stagnation exacerbates our fibromyalgia pain. We like to focus on the less invasive remedies for any lymphatic involvement, because if you are living with fibromyalgia, you already have enough side effects from the condition itself.

When pain, tension and stagnation of any kind take place in the body, every system is affected; this is often where diseases of various kinds begin to manifest in the body. With a complex illness such as fibromyalgia and the propensity to multiple TRP’s (trigger points), the body becomes more vulnerable to a ‘dysfunction’ in the circulatory and lymphatic systems.

However, the circulatory system has a somewhat greater ability to regulate itself (through the heart) whereas the lymphatic system needs more support without a “pumping station” of its own.

The many lymph nodes within our body are designed to protect our immune system and well-being. Yet without consistent force exerted on the lymphatic system, this constant stagnation can lead to or exacerbate illness…everything from fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue to cancer.
Just like our bones, our lymphatic system needs a healthy amount of force to keep our immune system healthy and free of accumulating excess toxins.

It has been found that lymphatic congestion is more likely to occur around TRP (trigger point) areas of the fibro body. This is due to the constriction, tension and radiating pain within these TRP’s.

Lymphatic congestion can also be the result of a poor diet, insufficient exercise and dysfunction within the liver and bile ducts. This congestion leads to increased pain, fatigue, water retention, and fat pockets on the body.

Sounds like a good idea to keep those lymphatic juices flowing properly, right?

Trigger points themselves can also cause lymphatic constriction in and around many sensitive areas of the body. And, many people with fibro have multiple trigger point areas on the body, making way for increased propensity for lymphatic stagnation, more symptoms and greater risk for all disease. A common area of lymphatic congestion for women is around the breast and pelvic area where many lymph nodes are located. This can be of special concern for women with fibromyalgia because of a greater propensity for FBD, or Fibrocystic Breast Disease.

A trampoline is an effective lymphatic decongestant.

Although not life threatening, FBD can cause severe pain for weeks and months at a time with stabbing pain and increased pain during movement involving the breast area. Also, due to the fact that lymphatic flow is constricted, this can be of greater concern in the prevention of breast and other cancers.

This fibrocystic breast pain might even deter a woman from working out due to movement and pain during exercise, and yet that is exactly what is needed to get the lymphatic system flowing properly.

Keep The Lymphatic Juices Flowing

Let’s review some effective ways to counteract lymphatic congestion, some you may already be utilizing and maybe some you may want to add as greater prevention in your heal-thy lifestyle.

A healthy lymphatic system will aid in natural detoxing of the body and assist in regeneration as well.

Exercise must be safe and effective

Exercise is going to be number one when it comes to keeping the lymphatic system healthy and moving. As a fellow fibro and as a trainer specializing in fibromyalgia, I surely get it and that is why I do this. I always offer modifications that are also effective.

Safe and effective exercise is an integral part of any fibro wellness plan.  You can read more atfibromyalgia-exercises. Forget about exercise in the traditional sense when beginning a fitness plan for fibromyalgia, read through the various fitness articles here on the site..

When starting any fibromyalgia fitness plan, it becomes more about preparing the body, keeping it safe and effective and applying techniques to lessen post exercise malaise and stay consistent. On the fitness page, Fibro Fit People, on facebook, I perform a lot of tapping lymphatic type exercises that are very gentle yet effective.

Also, sleeping according to the body clock but not excessively, for this can also contribute to a sluggish lymphatic system.

TRAMPOLINE (OR ALTERNATIVE) IS ANOTHER TOOL FOR CHRONIC PAIN MANAGEMENT

Rebounding through the use of a small trampoline (in background) is very effective in getting the lymphatic system moving through force exerted on the lymph nodes. Just 5-10 minutes per day is sufficient, starting with 1-2 minutes. The link above shows many rebounders, but quality is essential.

If a rebounder is not available or you cannot perform even light jumping, a large exercise ball can be used. Simply sit on the ball and gently bounce, using mostly the upper body with feet on the floor. I show this in the video section ofFibro Fit People. Yes, watch my video, it is extremely effective!!

(Please note that vibration machines can also be used for lymphatic congestion,but not everyone with fibromyalgia will tolerate the vibration. We use a a chi-machine here and that is excellent as well. Just a few minutes is very effective, start slow and work up to tolerance.)

Skin Brushing   

You brush you hair every day, right? What about your skin?
Skin brushing activates the lymphatic system through the stimulating touch to the skin. A brush designed specifically for gentle skin brushing or even a loofah type sponge can be used effectively. Skin brushing is best done before applying lotion to the body.

Start with the top of the head, exert gentle to moderate pressure and work with gentle strokes toward the heart, up from wrist to shoulder, up from ankles to thigh, etc. Don’t forget the abdomen, gently stroke up from the lower abdomen to the chest .. (there are lots of lymph nodes around the groin, abdomen and within the chest area)

THE LIVER/BILE DUCT CONNECTION

The lymphatic system is intimately involved with the function of the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts. Diseases of the liver and gallbladder have been on the rise in recent years often as a result of years of poor diet and lifestyle habits.

When there is stagnation within the liver and bile ducts, this produces congestion within the lymphatic system and the body’s ability to properly cleanse waste materials from the body.

Adhering to an anti-inflammatory diet is the best way to prevent and treat liver dysfunction and inflamed bile ducts. Often doctors take out the gallbladder on a patient presenting symptoms yet the underlying cause is often inflammation within the bile ducts.

WHAT ABOUT HERBAL SUPPORT ?

There are a few herbal remedies that can support chronic pain management for the lymphatic system. Two of these are Juniper Berries and Burdock Root.

Organic Juniper Berries are excellent for both the lymphatic and the urinary system. Chronic pain management in fibromyalgia needs to always address the elimination systems of the body ..
Burdock root is used for gently and effectively ‘detoxing’ the body. Also great for purification of the skin.

These herbs can be found in organic dry form in bulk herbal departments of health food stores or online and are very cost effective.

The herbs can be used to make tea, and this is also the most cost effective way to utilize these herbs. About 2 Tbsp. of each added to a pint of water and simmer in a small pot for 10 minutes, then let sit and steep before pouring your tea. NOTE: water can be added back to pot and used one additional time.

Add any other herbs of synergistic quality as well.

LYMPHATIC MASSAGE FOR CHRONIC PAIN MANAGEMENT OF THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM

Another great tool that can be especially beneficial for the sensitive fibro body is lymphatic massage. The great thing about this type of massage is that it is very gentle and light without the need for too much applied pressure. Too much pressure should never be applied with lymphatic massage, more of a ‘sweeping’ motion, very similar to the afore-mentioned skin brushing technique.

If you’ve got fibromyalgia, you will benefit greatly from keeping those lymphatic juices flowing !!  As with every other chronic pain management tool we use here, consistency is the key to getting better results while reducing levels of pain, stagnation and overall symptoms.

Chesterfield women fight to get ‘debilitating illness’ officially recognised as a disability

Three sisters from Inkersall have told Peak FM of their struggle in coping with a genetic condition known as fibromyalgia.

Adrienne Lakin, Sarah Lakin and Leanne Marie Lakin all suffer from the condition, and they sat down and told Peak FM the harrowing details of their struggle to cope with it, and their fight to get the issue discussed in parliament.

So far they have received more than 10,000 signatures but require around 100,000 to get MP’s to discuss it.

At the moment fibromyalgia is deemed as an impairment in the Equality act 2010, and the main symptoms of the condition are widespread pain in the muscles and bones, areas of tenderness, and general fatigue.

However there are several other symptoms associated with the condition, including: Extreme sensitivity, Stiffness, Fatigue, Poor sleep quality, Cognitive problems, Headaches, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), dizziness and clumsiness, feeling too hot or too cold, restless legs syndrome, tingling, numbness, prickling or burning sensations in your hands and feet, anxiety and depression.

Adrienne Lakin said: “It affects family life and friendships. You do lose friends over it. I’ve lost my job through ill health and the job centre put me on employment support allowance but I can’t look for work, the doctors don’t allow me to.”

Sarah said: “It makes you feel like you’re helpless. This is why we’re campaigning because so many people out there struggle with this on a day-to-day basis.. We’re having to use walking aids and my sisters are only in their 20’s.”

Currently sufferers of fibromyalgia do not receive any help from the government when they are in too much pain to work, but the Lakin sisters are working to change that. They have been campaigning to get the illness recognised as a genuine disability in parliament to aid those suffering from it, and to provide extra support and awareness for Fibromyalgia.

Leeann Marie Lakin added: “My eight-year-old has seen me go from the fun-loving, chasing around, happy-go-lucky mum, to virtually an old woman. I shouldn’t be having to ask an eight year old to look after a 29-year-old. That’s not on.”

Do you know the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis?

It’s the most common cause of neurological disability in young adults, it has no cure, and it affects around 100,000 people in the UK.

Yet mention MS to a lot of people and the answers you’ll get will range from “Is that chronic fatigue syndrome?” to “Is that what Stephen Hawking has?”

The answers to both these questions is “No, it’s not” (that’s ME and Motor Neurone Disease, respectively).

That said, they’re not entirely wrong: one of the critical symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis is extreme fatigue, and MS is a condition that-like Motor Neurone Disease-affects the central nervous system.

We asked the UK’s leading MS charity, the MS Society, what you need to know about the condition on World MS Day (May 31).

Is there a misunderstanding of what Multiple Sclerosis is?

There does seem to be a general misunderstanding of how MS affects people; a survey of over 2,200 members of the general public by the MS Society found that almost half (49%) of the general public can’t name one symptom of MS and one in 10 (10%) didn’t know whether the condition was contagious.

Many symptoms of MS are invisible to others so while people with MS might appear to be fine on the outside, they’re often struggling with a number of uncomfortable symptoms.

Another survey of 2,000 people with MS by the MS Society found nearly three-quarters (73%) of people had been questioned by complete strangers for ‘appearing to be well’ and almost everyone (90%) said they were frustrated with people putting their fatigue down to ‘just being tired’.

Is there an average age of diagnosis?

Symptoms usually start in your 20s or 30s, but MS can affect people of any age. It affects almost three times as many women as men.

How long does a MS diagnosis normally take?

MS can be difficult to diagnose. There’s no single, simple test that can tell whether someone has MS, and it can only be diagnosed by a neurologist. Some people can be diagnosed fairly quickly while others can experience symptoms for many years before they receive a diagnosis.

How many MS sufferers are there in the UK?

There are over 100,000 people living with MS in the UK.

What tend to be the main symptoms of MS?

MS is a very complex condition and symptoms can vary a great deal from person to person. Most people won’t experience them all, and certainly not at the same time.

Common MS symptoms include:

• fatigue
• vision problems
• pain
• problems with walking, balance and co-ordination
• muscle stiffness and spasms
• bladder and bowel problems.

Fatigue is just one of the many symptoms of MS that are invisible to others, yet can impact considerably on someone’s daily life. MS is also unpredictable, which can make planning and accessing the right care difficult.

Can people with MS still live a ‘normal’ life?

While the impact of MS on someone’s life cannot be underestimated, people with MS continue to live their lives to the full. Although symptoms of MS can make some areas of life difficult, the MS Society is working hard to make sure people with MS have the support they need to live full and independent lives.

There’s a general assumption that everyone with MS will end up in a wheelchair, is that true?

While the progressive form of the condition can lead to an accumulation of disability which can lead to mobility problems, everyone’s MS is different so it’s not true that everyone with the condition will eventually use a wheelchair. In fact, the majority of people with MS will not become severely disabled

What advice do you have for someone newly diagnosed with MS?

Being diagnosed with MS can be a scary and confusing time and many people can feel isolated. The MS Society is here to make sure people do not go through it alone.
